Across the country, YEN chapters have been keeping busy hosting events for The SAMFund. From bake sales to bartending, YEN members have been Making It Matter in a huge way. We’re so thankful for their commitment, and a little jealous we’ve missed out on so much fun!
From the HP blog, here are notes on some of the most recent events in the words of YEN leaders.
October 30. 2014: Bake Sale
On October 30th, Alpharetta YEN hosted a Halloween Bake Sale! Dozens of volunteers baked delicious goodies for the event, including ghoulish cupcakes, terrifyingly good muffins, fiendish cookies, and witch hand popcorn bags! The YEN team (dressed as pirates, ninjas, Gumby, maids, and more) wheeled carts full of the goodies all around the site, delivering and selling yummy treats to employees around the buildings. It was great fun and a big hit with our colleagues, who took pictures with the team and took flyers about our The SAMFund campaign.
When the YEN team finished, we’d raised over $750 in just a few short hours and had shared our message with most of the Alpharetta site. This event was a tremendous success!
November 2014: The Mohawk and Beard Challenges
Dan Hildebrand and Zack Godfrey in Alpharetta, as well as Luis Aguirre in Palo Alto, but their beards and hair on the line for The SAMFund during No Shave November. Dan sculpted a massive purple Mohawk out of his hair after raising close to $10,000, while Luis and Zack offered up their facial hair to donors, letting them choose how they sculpted their scruff after No Shave November. All told, the three guys raised over $23,000, over 10% of YEN’s overall goal!
Nov 4, 2014: The SAMFund Event
Bay Area YEN
Wow. What an amazing event we had with The SAMFund! Not only did HP’s own Steve Bandrowczak come and share his experience with this amazing organization, we also had Sam Watson (the founder) and three SAMFund Grant Recipients(Courtney, Doug, and Tony) come to share their stories. As you can see in the pictures below, we had some great moments getting to know these people and understanding the financial hardships that tend to fall on young adults after beating cancer. We were able to see first-hand how generosity can go a long way to change someone’s life. So much so, we had HP employees making donations right outside of the event room! A HUGE thank you to everyone who took some time out of their day to learn more about this amazing cause!
November 6, 2014: Talent Show
In YEN Alpharetta’s most popular event yet, over 130 people came to the site cafeteria (which had become a stage and theater!) to see six HP employees sing, breakdance, and showcase their talents! Five judges, including Vice President and Site Council Lead Bernie Woods and SAMFund alum Vanessa Smith, praised the participants and cracked a few jokes along the way. MC Ashley Rogers kept the audience rolling, and the performers wowed us with their talents! The house was packed, and when Vanessa shared her story of survival and how The SAMFund helped her, the crowd was on its feet. The YEN Alpharetta Talent Show brought the house down and was a great kickoff to HP’s Employee Giving Campaign!
November 12, 2014: Bake Sale
Bay Area YEN
We are proud to say we raised over $1,000 during our first fundraiser for The SAMFund! Our YEN Board baked over 450 treats including muffins, brownies, cake pops, cinnamon bread, and much, much more! But it was you all who truly made the difference with your generous donations. Not only did we raise $1,000 from selling, but the awareness we spread while walking the campus with our carts and talking to employees enticed many to donate through https://hp.yourcause.com/
November 17, 2014: Houston Kick-Off
The YEN chapter in Houston started their campaign in a big way, with an event that featured HP VP and SAMFund board member Steve Bandrowczak, Skype visits from SAMFund alums Sarah and Katie W., and an in-person visit from SAMFund alum (and her adorable baby boy!) Katie J. Almost 100 HP employees were able to hear personal stories from young adult survivors and learn more about what The SAMFund has to offer.
November 19, 2014: Party @ The Counter for The SAMFund
Bay Area YEN
Thanks to our amazing members, we had another successful fundraiser for The SAMFund this week (and got to know more of you in the process)! This time we took our fundraising efforts outside of HP to The Counter on California Ave in Palo Alto. We had an awesome lunch with some of our YENers and15% of all sales from the day (with our flyer) went to The SAMFund – we raised over $400! Thank you for taking time out of your day to support our cause, raise awareness for others, and eat some delicious burgers!
November 19, 2014: Employee Giving Campaign Extravaganza
Every year, the Alpharetta site chooses an organization to support during the Employee Giving Campaign (EGC) Extravaganza. Thanks to YEN’s efforts this year, The SAMFund was the clear choice of the site! We were very fortunate to have Sam and several SAMFund grant recipients present during the event, which featured door prizes, an awesome raffle, managers getting pies thrown in their faces by their employees, and much more! Over $4,000 was raised for The SAMFund during EGC day, a wonderful gift from the whole site to The SAMFund and YEN’s goal!
December 2, 2014: Guest Bartending at Paul & Eddie’s
Bay Area YEN
Thanks to those who joined us on Tuesday as our very own Jessica Barry poured drinks in support of The SAMFund at the award winning Paul & Eddie’s bar in Cupertino. Through tips, tricks, and the generosity of the bar’s owners (sharing over 30% of the nights profits), the Bay Area YEN was able to raise over $800 in support of The SAMFund #cancerisntfree. We were also fortunate enough to be joined by SAMFund Grant Recipient Doug who is always the life of the party. Thank you again to those who came, and we look forward to seeing more YENers at our next event.
December 16, 2014: Holiday Party & Silent Auction
Bay Area YEN
Thank you everyone who made it out to our Holiday Party and Silent Auction! We had a great turnout despite that pesky storm that tried to keep everyone at home. We had a lot of holiday sweets, Ugly Sweaters, a Cat Tail Beard (courtesy of Luis’ SAMFund Beard Challenge), and some burritos & pizza for the early birds who attended. We also kicked off the Silent Auction during the party, where things got real competitive real quick! There were 25 items up for grabs, and through your bids we were able to raise over $2,400 for The SAMFund! You all have been incredible with your support for these fundraising efforts, and all of you truly are making it matter for those in need.
It has been an amazing year in the world of YEN. Thank you to everyone who has participated in the different events since our relaunch. We have many more events on deck for next year so be on the lookout! We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday break and we hope you enjoy some well-deserved downtime. See you in the New Year!
